Get a (here) quick overview of who we are, what we try to achieve and how we do this in the Clear5G project.

Clear5G will start officially on September 1st 2017

The Clear5G project team will officially start working on the project on September 1st 2017. The project kick off will be held on September 19th and 20th at the University of Surrey and will be hosted by the 5GIC (5G Innovation centre) team. During the first months we will detail the use cases, evaluate, together with our manufacturing partners, the actual real world requirements for wireless systems in industrial environments and start defining the system requirements which will then influence the design on PHY, MAC and networking layers.

5G for Europe Action Plan

Back in 2016, the European Comission published the "The 5G Action Plan" which is a strategic initiative that addresses all stakeholders, from private to public, small to large, and in all Member States.  The initiative is intended to meet the challenge of making 5G a reality for all citizens and businesses by the end of this decade!

Part of the Action Plan, and of particular relevance for Clear5G, is the vision that 5G will lead to an industrial transformation through wireless broadband services provided at Gigabit speeds. This does not only include the expectation that 5G will offer data connections above 10 Gigabits per second, and latencies below 5 milliseconds, but also the exploitation to exploit any available wireless resources (from Wi-Fi to 4G) and to handle millions of connected devices simultaneously.

The 5G PPP - White paper on Factories of the Future

The 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G PPP) published their white paper on “5G and the Factories of the Future” back in 2015. The paper discusses the challenges for wireless communications in manufacturing environments and use cases and it makes it clear that the manufacturing industry is one of the most demanding verticals with respect to ultra-low latencies, ultra-high availability, reliable indoor coverage in harsh environments and energy-efficient and ultra-low communication costs for produced, connected goods.
